Chiefly correspondence with William C. Richards and William Tappan Thompson [Joseph Jones], who edited magazines that published Mary Moragne's stories and sketches; travel letters from her brother William C. Moragne from Heidelberg, Germany, and Paris, France, re religious and social activities, architecture, and financial situation in the United States; and letters, 4 Jan.-5 Sept. 1847, from her brother John Moragne re experiences in the Mexican War, including troop movements, battles, and military life. Also including letters, 21 May 1841, 5 Jan. 1898, and 18 Mar. 1898, William Tappan Thompson (in Augusta, Ga.), and R. Means Davis (in Talladega, Ala.), re her literary work: Thompson thanks her for the literary contributions to his newspaper, regrets that his payments could not match the value of her efforts, and anticipates that "you will continue to make the Mirror... the favored medium of your literary intercourse with your numerous friends and admirers"; Professor R.M. Davis thanks her for a book of poetry, encourages her to write a reminiscence of Edgefield District and Abbeville District, S.C., during the antebellum period, and comments on her recollection of Willington Academy; letter, Sept. 1841, Abbeville, S.C., from John Cunningham to Mary Moragne, re female education in Abbeville, S.C., and the southern states, and prompting her to establish a female academy. Davis' diary, 1837-1842 (unbound), re her life in Abbeville District, S.C., entries re farming, politics, church activities and her religious views, experience as a school teacher, local news, and observations of African-Americans as slaves, servants, and freedmen; and undated manuscripts re M.E. Moragne's early life and literary sketches.
